What is Ankara wax cotton?
Ankara wax cotton—often called African wax print—is recognised for vibrant colour, distinctive motifs and a crisp, structured feel that works beautifully in expressive clothing.

The fabric’s history is connected to Indonesian batik and European industrial textile production, but its identity was transformed through African trade, dressmaking and cultural expression. It became especially important across West and Central Africa, where particular colours and motifs can acquire local names, associations and meanings.
“Wax Hollandais” is not a general name for every Ankara fabric. It refers more specifically to a Dutch wax-print tradition and product category. Ankara fabrics are now produced by different manufacturers in Africa, Europe and Asia, using processes and finishes that can vary.
Strong on both sides
The design commonly shows clearly on the front and reverse, although the two sides are not always completely identical in intensity or finish.
Useful structure
New wax cotton often feels crisp or full-bodied, helping pleats, gathers, sleeves and shaped silhouettes hold their form.
Softer with wear
Careful washing and wear usually soften the fabric while preserving its characteristic colour and body.

Not every fabric sold as “African print” has the same composition, weight, colourfastness or finish. Most of Aura Afriq’s listed Ankara fabrics are cotton, but we confirm the supplier’s description and assess the actual cloth before matching it to a dress style.
We consider the fabric’s width, weight, drape, print direction, opacity and the amount needed. A crisp cotton may be ideal for a structured A-line shape, while a softer fabric may suit a flowing maxi or wrap dress.

- Hand wash separately in cold or lukewarm water using a mild detergent.
- Do not bleach, wring or soak for long periods.
- Air dry inside out in the shade.
- Iron on the reverse using medium heat.
Care instructions can vary by manufacturer and finish. Embellished fabrics and specialist wax prints may require gentler treatment.
